ADCMW is bringing you a fun 2.5 hour workshop all about experimenting with type and playful "digital" lettering -- that is, using your fingers, ink and paper! There will be demos, handouts, anecdotes, projects shown, and a chance to get inky yourself using materials provided. All this, along with the finely-drawn insights from one of the top letterers in the country.
Protegé of legendary type designer Hermann Zapf, Julian Waters has been called the most respected calligrapher/lettering designer of his generation. His clients include National Geographic, Adobe Systems, US Postal Service, publishers, studios and agencies. He was the typographic designer for the newly opened Thomas Jefferson Visitors Center at Monticello, working with architects Ayers/Saint/Gross and the design team at Staples & Charles. Julian created large scale calligraphic lettering cut in metal, and using FontLab software, he designed a new custom font family "ThJefferson" for text and headings throughout the complex in information graphics, signage, animated typographic projections, video and interactive flat panel displays. Concurrently, seven of his calligraphic art pieces are on display at the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore.
And as a special treat, ADCMW is giving away a free sketchbook (a $30 value) to each workshop participant, featuring the hand-drawn type of Carolyn Sewell.
